Precision Engineering That Delivers Superior Performance

Traditional Bitumen Production Falls Short

When infrastructure projects demand consistent quality and reliable supply, traditional air blowing methods create problems:

  • Inconsistent quality from poor mixing and high oxygen levels
  • Excessive energy consumption with air volumes 10x higher than necessary
  • Environmental impact from inefficient processes and higher emissions
  • Limited precision in achieving exact penetration grades

Your projects deserve better than “good enough” bitumen that compromises performance and increases long-term costs.

100+ Years of Innovation

Since 1914, when Sir Russell Matthews applied the first bitumen to a New Zealand road, Technix has been solving infrastructure challenges through innovation. Our journey spans over a century of developing world-first innovations, from polymer modified binders to multistage bitumen plants.

Technix Pacific builds on that heritage with advanced multistage reactor technology that delivers precision, efficiency, and sustainability for South Pacific infrastructure projects.

Three Pillars of Advanced Reactor Technology

Precision Control

Our multistage reactors operate as high-recycle loop systems with specially designed static mixers, enabling surgical precision in bitumen production. We can fine-tune penetration grades with remarkable accuracy, manufacturing 90/95 penetration bitumen within 70/100 specifications. This engineered approach can modify bitumens, manufacture multigrade products, and produce bitumen from refinery residues or solvent-precipitated asphalts with consistent quality, batch after batch.

Superior Efficiency

Our reactors achieve turbulent flow with Reynolds numbers approaching 160,000, enhancing mass transfer for rapid reactions and stable continuous production. Using only 5 m³/minute of air per reactor (up to ten times less than conventional blowing towers) we dramatically reduce energy consumption and emissions. Oxygen entering at 21% typically exits at just 3-6%, demonstrating exceptional efficiency whilst operating at pressures up to 6 bar with atmospheric degassers for enhanced safety.

Heat Recovery & Energy Optimisation

Feedstock is preheated to 170-230°C using thermal oil heaters, with the exothermic reaction raising bitumen temperature by 5-10°C. Our advanced heat recovery system uses plate heat exchangers where bitumen exiting at 230-240°C warms incoming feed, allowing product to leave at around 180°C. This high level of energy recovery improves efficiency, reduces operational costs, and minimises environmental impact compared to conventional systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does multistage reactor technology differ from traditional air blowing?
Q
P

Traditional air blowing uses high air volumes with poor mixing and high oxygen levels in exhaust. Our multistage reactors operate as high-recycle loop systems with narrow tubes and specially designed static mixers. We use only 5 m³/minute of air per reactor—up to 10 times less than conventional methods—while achieving superior mixing with Reynolds numbers approaching 160,000. This results in better quality control, reduced energy consumption, and lower emissions.

Can your reactors produce bitumen to our specific country standards?
Q
P

Yes. Our precision engineering allows us to fine-tune penetration grades with surgical accuracy. For example, we can manufacture a 90/95 penetration bitumen that falls within 70/100 specifications. We regularly produce bitumens meeting Australian, New Zealand, US, and European standards, tailored to your exact project requirements.

What makes your heat recovery system more efficient?
Q
P

Our process preheats feedstock to 170-230°C, then recovers heat through plate heat exchangers. Bitumen exiting at 230-240°C warms the incoming feed, allowing product to leave at around 180°C. This high level of energy recovery not only improves efficiency but significantly reduces operational costs and environmental impact compared to conventional systems.

How do you ensure consistent quality with your reactor technology?
Q
P

We use advanced analytical techniques including SARA fractionation and the Gaestel Index to assess asphaltenes, saturates, aromatics, and resins. This scientific approach, combined with our controlled thermal regime and turbulent flow mixing, enables us to select appropriate feedstocks and design processing parameters that yield stable binders with excellent performance characteristics, batch after batch.

What safety features are built into your reactor systems?
Q
P

Our reactors can operate at pressures up to 6 bar while degassers run at atmospheric pressure, enhancing both safety and control. The controlled thermal regime, robust engineering, and efficient oxygen consumption (entering at 21%, exiting at just 3-6%) create a safer operating environment. Our goal is simple: no injuries, ever.

Can your technology produce specialty and modified bitumens?
Q
P

Absolutely. Our multistage reactors can modify bitumens, manufacture multigrade products, and produce bitumen from various feedstocks including refinery residues or solvent-precipitated asphalts. We produce polymer modified binders, multigrade bitumens for superior temperature performance, and specialty grades for industrial applications—all with the same precision and quality control.
